What is anchor reading? An honest 2026 explainer
The technique that bolds the first letters of each word. Here's what it actually is, what the research says, who it helps, and a free converter to try it.
Anchor reading is a typographic technique that bolds the first 3-4 letters of each word in a text, giving your eye a stable visual anchor on each word. The bolded prefix is what you fixate on; your brain fills in the rest of the word from context, reducing the number of fixations your eye needs per line. A commercial variant was popularized in 2022 by a Swiss developer under a trademarked brand, though similar anchor-based reading aids have existed in research literature for decades. The honest truth about whether it works: the original studies claimed significant comprehension and speed lifts that were largely not replicated in independent research. Anecdotal reports from ADHD and dyslexic readers are consistently more positive than from neurotypical readers. It helps some people noticeably, others not at all, and there's no reliable way to predict which group you're in without trying it on real material.
What anchor reading looks like
That's the entire technique. The "intensity" of the bolding (how many letters of each word get bolded) is adjustable in most implementations — typically 30% to 50%. Lower percentages are subtler; higher percentages are more aggressive.
How it's supposed to work
The underlying theory is built on what we know about how the eye actually reads. Reading isn't smooth — your eye moves in short jumps called saccades, landing for brief pauses called fixations. You don't read every letter of every word. You fixate on key points and your brain reconstructs the rest. Fluent readers fixate roughly 4-5 times per line; struggling readers fixate more often and sometimes regress (jump backward to re-read).
Anchor reading's claim is that the bolded prefix gives your eye an obvious target to land on. Instead of scanning for a fixation point, the visual contrast makes the decision for you. In theory: fewer fixations, less regression, lower cognitive load per line, more capacity left for comprehension.
That's a reasonable theory. The question is whether it actually plays out in practice.
What the research actually says
The honest summary: the strong claims (40% faster reading, dramatically better comprehension) made in the technique's early commercial marketing materials were largely not replicated when independent researchers tested them.
- 2022 ReadingMatters study: No significant comprehension or speed improvements for typical adult readers when anchor-formatted text was compared to plain text.
- 2022 Nielsen Norman Group review: Concluded that anchor reading is "not a magic bullet" and that the theoretical mechanism, while plausible, does not translate to measurable gains for the general population.
- 2023 University of Calgary work: Found subjective preference splits — some readers (particularly with reading difficulties) reported feeling that anchor text was easier; others reported it as visually distracting.
- Spritz / RSVP research (related but different): Research on serial word presentation (where words flash one at a time) shows more consistent speed effects, but with comprehension trade-offs and limited applicability outside drill sessions.
Two qualifications. First, "no significant effect" in research often means "no effect for the average reader." Subgroups (ADHD, dyslexia, low working memory) can have meaningful individual effects that disappear in population averages. Second, almost all of the formal research has been on neurotypical college-student readers — the population least likely to need a reading aid. Research specifically on ADHD or dyslexia populations with anchor reading is sparse and not yet conclusive.
Who actually benefits?
Anecdotal reports — including in my own ADHD reading life and from FocusReader's users — converge on a pattern that the research hasn't formally confirmed but is consistent enough to take seriously:
- ADHD readers often report a reduction in the "my eyes are moving but nothing is landing" experience. Not faster reading per se — but staying with a paragraph longer before drifting.
- Dyslexic readers report mixed results. For some, the visual contrast helps anchor the eye. For others, the irregular bold/light pattern is itself distracting.
- Tired readers (end-of-day, post-work, low cognitive resources) sometimes find anchor text easier to push through than plain text.
- Second-language readers have reported feeling more confident with the visual decomposition of each word.
- Fluent native readers reading easy text almost universally report no benefit or slight distraction — anchor is solving a problem they don't have.

Adjacent techniques worth knowing
BeeLine Reader (color gradients)
