Audiobook vs reading: what the research actually says

"Does listening count as reading" gets argued about constantly, usually with more opinion than evidence. The actual comprehension research is less dramatic, and more useful, than the debate suggests.

For narrative and general non-fiction, comprehension research finds audiobooks and silent reading close to equivalent under matched, full-attention conditions, a widely cited study by cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham and colleagues found no significant comprehension gap between the two. Where they genuinely differ: dense or numbers-heavy material favors text, which you can re-scan and visually anchor; distraction resistance favors neither format inherently, since retention gaps in studies usually trace back to divided attention, not the format itself; and drift recovery favors audio with synced text, since a moving highlight makes losing your place immediately visible instead of silently invisible.

The core finding: comprehension is close either way

The most-cited comparison, Willingham's team's work on reading versus listening comprehension, found that for narrative and general non-fiction content, comprehension scores were statistically similar between the two formats when attention was equally full in both conditions. The popular idea that audiobooks are a lesser, passive substitute for "real" reading isn't well supported by the comprehension data. Both formats are doing the same underlying language-processing work, just through a different sensory channel.

The real advantage for ADHD readers specifically

The comprehension-parity finding understates one practical difference. Silent reading gives ADHD attention no signal when it drifts. Ten minutes can pass with your eyes moving down the page and nothing registering, and you only find out when you try to recall what happened. Audio with word-level highlighting removes that blind spot entirely: if your mind wanders, the highlight keeps moving without you, and the moment you look back at the page you can see exactly where the gap started. That's not a comprehension advantage in the traditional research sense, it's a recovery-speed advantage, and for attention that drifts often, recovery speed matters more than raw comprehension parity.

The strongest option isn't audiobook versus reading

It's both, at once. Hearing a voice while watching the matching text highlighted gives you the comprehension research's "close to equivalent" result from either format individually, plus the drift-visibility advantage audio-only doesn't fully provide (since with audio alone you still have to notice you've stopped absorbing before you can recover). This is the actual mechanism behind word-synced read-aloud, not narration as a nice-to-have, but two channels reinforcing the same content so drift becomes visible and recoverable in seconds instead of invisible for minutes.
